Our swimming teachers and the UK youth mobility scheme

24/10/2024

Our swimming centre actively engages with the UK Youth Mobility Scheme to highlight the benefits of collaborating with swimming teachers from international and diverse backgrounds.

Our centre recognizes the importance of cultural exchange and skill development facilitated by the Youth Mobility Scheme.

This initiative allows us to attract talented swimming teachers from various countries, enriching our local community and providing our swimmers with diverse perspectives on teaching and learning. By integrating international instructors into our programs, we foster an inclusive environment where different swimming techniques, styles, and cultural practices are shared, enhancing the overall quality of our instruction.

We currently have the following teaching with us :

Kohei  from Tokyo ,  Japan
Jaymie from  Brisbane , Australia
Izzie  from Melbourne, Australia
Rosti from Kharkiv , Ukraine

We are hoping soon to appoint teachers from other countries within the scheme including South Korea , New Zealand and Canada.

We hope the scheme will widen to include all EU countries

Working with teachers from diverse backgrounds not only improves our training methods but also promotes cultural awareness among our swimmers. This exposure helps to build confidence and adaptability in our swimmers, preparing them for a globalized world. The diverse experiences these instructors bring also resonate with our youth, inspiring them to pursue their own aspirations in sports and beyond.
Moreover, our collaboration with international teachers aligns with our commitment to high standards of coaching. By blending various teaching philosophies, we create a rich learning experience that caters to the needs of all our swimmers, helping them to achieve their personal best.

In summary, our engagement with the UK Youth Mobility Scheme enhances our swimming programmes through cultural diversity and innovative teaching practices. We are proud to provide a platform where our swimmers can thrive, supported by a team of passionate and skilled instructors from around the globe.
Thank you for considering the importance of this initiative. We look forward to continuing to build a vibrant, inclusive swimming community.

March 2022
Brighton Swimming School staff and volunteers have collected three tons of emergency aid for Ukraine since Russia invasion.
We have sent supplies directly to Ukraine’s border with Poland as well as weekly truck-loads to a Polish community centre in London to send on to refugees entering eastern Poland. Paul Smith, the Brighton Swimming Centre owner, said: “I was immediately shocked and sickened by the suffering and felt I had to do something so along with the centre’s manager, Jade Gurr, and our office team we developed a plan.”
Jade Gurr, centre's manager said: “It has been amazing. Almost immediately parents were bringing everything from crayons and colouring books to winter coats, the generosity has been overwhelming – and even the children have been helping sort the aid.”
Brighton Swimming School’s large group volunteers has been helping with the huge job of sorting the supplies and packing it into boxes. Sorting into boxes has been a huge task and we are so very grateful to everyone who has helped us.

Paul Smith and Kate Lancaster were going for a Sunday morning dip off Brighton beach when they spotted the Walkers crisp bag on the pebbles just below Royal Crescent. The cheese and onion packet was still intact, despite showing an expiry date of October 1996. Swimmers described the find as “incredible” but worrying. Brighton Swimming Centre Owner says:

“It’s incredible someone in their teenage years could have thrown this in the sea. They’d be in their forties now, what it shows is rubbish doesn’t just go away, there’s a good chance it will outlive you.”

This summer the Brighton Swimming Centre along with the RNLI and Swim England are teaching hundreds of 7-14 year olds to have fun and stay safe in the sea as part of the “Swim Safe“ campaign.

Specially trained Brighton Swimming Centre Staff are introducing small groups of children to swimming safely in the sea, teaching them how to enter the water safely, where it is safe to swim, why currents and tides are important and how to call help if needed.

Altogether 350 children have been taught this summer. Classes have taken place at Madeira Drive and Hove Lawns in Brighton.

Jade Cohen – Manager of the Brighton Swimming Centre said ‘its always been a priority for us to engage young people with the sea and this has been a perfect opportunity. The lessons are free, fun and have proven to be very popular across the city”. We very much hope to offer this again next summer.’

One mother - Erika Greig added ‘the children had such a brilliant time , we all learnt a lot – Its been an amazing opportunity!’
